photoSHOEMACHER, Paul Edward Age 99, of Kettering, passed away Friday, July 14, 2017 under the care of Hospice at Bethany Village in Centerville. Paul was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to John J. and Emily Mae (Hill) Shoemacher. Paul attended high school in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Albion College in Albion, Michigan.

He served as aircraft maintenance officer in the US Army Air Force during WWII, in the Wright Patterson AFB Flight Test Division and in the 10th Army Air Force Division in Burma. During the Korean War he was recalled to military service as a flight test engineer at Edwards AFB, California. Beginning in 1953 he was employed at Wright Patterson AFB as a Mechanical Engineer, Flight Test Engineer and Operations Research Analyst. He co-authored the Flight Test Engineering Manual for the US Air Force and developed an Aerodynamics Slide Rule for flight test calculations.

He retired from federal service in 1975 and received the Air Force Meritorious Civilian Service award. He was a past member of the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron and a Boy Scout leader.

A devoted and loving husband and father, Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Ruby (Alley), the mother of his 4 sons; by Arlene (Fitzsimmons), his wife of 11 years and by his stepbrother, Jack Montgomery. Paul is survived by his sons Jeff (Jane), Mark (Monica), David (Jonnie), Steve (Michelle), grandchildren Heidi, Julie, Jaimee, Matthew, Justin, Michael and 8 great grandchildren.
